THE 12 PERCENT AND GROWING COALITION

Today (Tuesday) from 10:30-12:30 on the steps of City Hall, 1 Centre Street ...

The 12% and Growing Coalition, a coalition of over 45 Asian-led or-serving community-based organizations, will hold an Asian Pacific American City Advocacy Day to call for a stop to the City budget cuts and bring attention to the urgent need to invest in services and program that ensure economic vitality and protect the most vulnerable community members. The Asian Pacific American community demands that we receive our fair share of State and City budgets to ensure that our community’s needs are met.

City Advocacy Day will consist of legislative visits, a briefing with City Council Members and staff, and a press conference and rally.

Press Conference Speakers:

David Chen, Executive Director, Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC)

Kalaivani S. Duane, Policy Manager, Coalition for Asian American Children and Families (CACF)

SJ Jung, President, MinKwon Center for Community Action (moderator)

Stephanie Lau, Assistant Executive Director, Chinatown Manpower Project

Linda Lee, Associate Executive Director, The Korean Community Services of Metropolitan New York (KCS)

Ka Man Wong, client of Greater Chinatown Community Association (GCCA)

Staff member, Sakhi for South Asian Women

Terrorist Trials

The trials for 9/11's Khalid Sheik Mohmmed are being held across from Columbus Park. This sucks for all New Yorkers, especially Chinatown-ers.

Many locals are worried that the increased security will turn the area into an armed area and drive out businesses and residents.

Chinatown has been through so much with the proximity being so close to the 9/11 site. It doesn't seem sensible to me to have the trial in the area that it devastated. Our community is fighting to bounce back form 9/11 and now the recession

Marco Polo Day

Today was the first Marco Polo Day Celebration to celebrate the formal designation of Chinatown and Little Italy as one historic district.

Local politicians and political candidates like John Liu, Margaret Chin, and Justin Yu were in attendance.

The celebrations included speakers, performances and food at SPQR Restaurant.

The Run Off

Today is an important day in the democratic primary. There is currently a run-off for the positions of Comptroller and Public Advocate.

Chinatown has been a place where politicians have been heavily soliciting votes. For Comptroller, Chinatown is almost whole heartedly supporting John Liu. I joke around that I see John more than any other person I know because his posters are EVERYWHERE!

For Public Advocate, it seems like most of the people I know in Chinatown are supporting Bill de Blasio. He has also been endorsed by Borough President Scott Stringer who I think is a super nice guy.

Remember that if you are a registered democrat, that your vote counts! Find your polling site today!
